The lodge, built in the 1980’s, was known as the Tlell River House and for years operated as a seasonal bear hunting lodge. In 1995, the Council of the Haida Nation passed a resolution at their Annual House of Assembly calling for the end of recreational trophy hunting of Black Bears on the Islands. By 2010, the Haida Nation succeeded in retiring the last remaining bear hunting licence and purchased the lodge, renaming it the Haida House at Tllaal. (Tllaal is the traditional Haida spelling of Tlell). As of June of 2012, the Haida House will re-open its doors and welcome visitors from around the world who seek a comfortable base from which to explore the exceptional culture and nature of Haida Gwaii.
