Explore the world’s fastest navigable tidal rapids and surrounding wilderness in the company of Aboriginal guides from the Gwa’sala and ‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations.

This fascinating cultural adventure aboard a 28’ Transport Canada certified vessel provides great insights into the magnitude of the rapids, which can run up to 17 knots during the peak tidal changes, as well as the local Aboriginal culture and wildlife.  This area is also the gateway to the southern part of British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest offering guests breathtaking views of its remote and mysterious coastline.

Boat Tours

It’s a 4 or 5-hour trip across Queen Charlotte Strait into some of the most remote – and most beautiful – wilderness in the world. Tour departure times depend on the run of the tide, but most cruises will happen in the morning with a few early afternoon and a select few “dinner cruises” in the early evening. It’s a wild ride, and it’s all tidal-powered, so trip schedules depend on the tides themselves, which change depending on the time of the year.

Cultural Performances

Tours are conducted by a knowledgeable guide from the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations and are designed to both entertain and educate. Trips begin after a traditional prayer and departure ceremony. Learn the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw origin story while transiting through Schooner Channel. Listen to traditional drumming provided by your cultural guide while traveling back to Port Hardy. Our knowledgeable guides can draw upon 10,000 years of shared cultural memories to provide the best experience possible.

Whale Watching

Our tour boats are actually equipped with hydrophones, which allow our guests to listen in on whale conversations. And it’s not just Orcas that frequent our beautiful corner of the planet. The waters off Port Hardy are frequently visited by Humpback and Fin Whales during the summer months. Populations of both species of whales are starting to recover after a moratorium on whaling over the past forty years or so. Other cetacean guests and residents in the region include several different species of dolphins and porpoises, as well as Sei, Fin and even gigantic Blue whales.

Marine Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife viewing, including whales, dolphins, eagles, sea birds, sea lions, porpoises, seals and more!
